Reiby Youth Justice Centre Abuse Allegations Deeply Concerning
Campbelltown MP Greg Warren has written to the Premier following allegations of
historical sexual abuse at Reiby Juvenile Justice Centre (RYJC) that were aired on the
ABC yesterday.
The report made reference to two sexual abuse incidents and youth justice centres –
with one in Brisbane and the other at RYJC.
A 25-year-old man from regional NSW said he was sexually abused 12 to 15 times by a
staff member whilst he was a detainee at RYJC in 2009.
Mr Warren said the allegations were extremely worrying and wrote to the Premier to
express his concerns.
“Detainees at youth justice centres may be incarcerated due to committing repeated or
serious crimes, however, that doesn’t mean concerns regarding their welfare can be
dismissed, “ Mr Warren wrote.
“The allegation of abuse at RYJC must be investigated swiftly and procedures must be
put in place to ensure no detainee is ever subject to abuse like that while incarcerated.
“The workers in youth justice centres are essentially guardians of the detainees, who
have been appointed to their positions by the NSW Government.
“Simply, the NSW Government has a duty of care to ensure the safety of these
detainees while they are incarcerated.”
